EQUINE-FACILITATED PSYCHOTHERAPY CERTIFICATION

The HERD Institute® offers Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy Training for Mental Health Practitioners. Each training workshop will focus on the philosophical, theoretical, and experiential process of incorporating equines into working with clients. Through the help of our herd of horses, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how their own process impacts on their client relationships. Workshops will include case study discussions and experiential exercises to demonstrate the theory.

What is the application process?

To apply, simply complete our online application form. Once you’ve completed the form and submitted it along with your resume, and we have received your two references, your application will be reviewed by our Admissions Team. You will then be invited to complete an informal interview via Zoom (a free, online meeting platform), lasting no more than an hour. You will receive a decision shortly after your interview.

Where do the trainings take place?

All our EFP workshops are held at our facility in Orlando, Florida, USA.

USA TUITION

*Tuition includes snacks and lunch each day. It does NOT include supervision requirements, travel, meals, and accommodation. For those who are interested in attending the workshop ONLY without CEU Certificates, the cost per workshop is $750. There is no Student Rate available for this option.

**To qualify for the Student Rate, you must be currently enrolled in a graduate program, and provide a letter of confirmation of enrollment from your school.

What Will You Learn?

The HERD Institute® EFP Certification equips practitioners with the breadth and depth of knowledge, skills, and ethical guidelines required to incorporate horses into clinical practice. The program is structured to provide the philosophical, theoretical, and experiential foundations for participants to integrate into their own personal philosophy. The aim is to support and inspire a new generation of practitioners to find their own unique style of bringing horses into their clients’ lives to facilitate profound healing and growth. The Intensives will cover:

 

  1. The importance of sharing space and entering into the herd
  2. The psychological and physiological impacts of being with horses
  3. The art of deepening the relationships between your client and horse(s)
  4. The art of facilitating your client’s journey towards their coming home to relationships
  5. The integration of philosophical, theoretical, and experiential learning (including the Ethics, Logistics, and Practicalities of running an EFP business)

 

Who Can Apply?

The HERD Institute® Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) Certification is designed to offer training to licensed professional counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other allied health professionals interested in incorporating horses into their work. The HERD Institute® training is offered with CE approval by the National Board for Certified Counselors* (NBCC) and approval by the American Psychological Association (APA)**. We are pending approval by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Graduate students who are close to eligibility for licensure may also apply. Admission to the training program will be at the discretion of the HERD faculty. 

*The HERD Institute®, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6845. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The HERD Institute®, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.

**The HERD Institute® is approved to provide Continuing Education through the American Psychological Association. Our Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy Certification offers 8 clock hours of CE per module. APA Division 32, Society for Humanistic Psychology, is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. APA Division 32, Society for Humanistic Psychology maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

ADMISSIONS PROCESS:

The HERD Institute® operates a rolling admissions policy and accepts applications year-round for upcoming training workshops. There are no set dates for application deadlines. The training workshops are repeated in sequence, and graduation is based on completion of all modules.

The admissions process is simple: Select the program you wish to apply for and fill in the online application form. Alternatively, contact The HERD Institute® via email at info@herdinstitute.com and we will assist you with the process.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:  At a minimum, you must have received, or anticipate receiving prior to the start of the workshop you are applying into, a bachelor’s degree from a regionally‐accredited college or university before applying for the Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy program at The HERD Institute®. Applications for the Equine-Facilitated Learning program do not have an academic degree requirement.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA: The HERD Institute® is committed to identifying students who will be a “good fit” for the HERD experience. Rather than grade‐point averages or standardized test scores, we emphasize:

  1. Academic history and professional experience
  2. Compatible background and interests with the offerings at The HERD Institute
  3. Ability to work well in a distance‐education format
  4. Demonstrated critical thinking and writing skills
  5. Personal motivation and readiness for personal exploration work

Acceptance to the programs is at the discretion of The HERD Institute® faculty.
